HMPV cases are on the rise in China, and at the same time, a new ampox variant is causing alarm. A patient in China has been identified with a new clade 1B variant, leading to four additional infections through contact. The discovery has put China's health department on high alert.

New variant: While the Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) was causing disruption in China, a new variant of the monkeypox virus, clade 1B, has surfaced. This infection was identified in a traveler from the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). Furthermore, four other people have been infected after contact with this individual. Those infected have been placed in isolation wards. With the HMP virus already affecting people in China, the emergence of the new monkeypox variant has increased concerns for the health department.
In response to the new monkeypox variant, China's CDC (Center for Disease Control) has enhanced testing and tracing in other provinces, including Zhejiang, Guangdong, Beijing, and Tianjin. The public is also encouraged to practice social distancing and maintain hygiene. Recent cases of ampox or monkeypox (clade 1B) have shown individuals with red spots and rashes on their bodies. Those infected are being monitored by doctors in isolation wards. Monkeypox is a viral infection that typically spreads from animals to humans.
Red rashes on the body
Officials from China's Center for Disease Control have indicated that ampox patients show symptoms like rashes and herpes. The disease initially presents as red spots on the skin, which progress into blisters or pimples that begin to ooze. Typical symptoms of ampox include fever, headache, chills, and muscle pain.
CDC appealed to people
The Centers for Disease Control advises against traveling to states with high infection rates. The CDC suggests avoiding these areas currently due to the fast spread of the infection. A notice on WeChat warns people to avoid contact with ampox patients or those showing possible symptoms. Ampox is a common cold and respiratory illness, with symptoms usually lasting 2-4 weeks.
