India has prolonged the visa of former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who has been residing in India since August. This action comes amid Bangladesh's increased calls for her return.

Bangladesh Politics : India has extended the visa of former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. She has been residing in India since August 2023. This decision comes at a time when calls for her return to Dhaka have grown stronger. The 77-year-old Hasina left Bangladesh and sought refuge in India amid nationwide protests and has been staying in a secure location in Delhi since then.
India recently extended Sheikh Hasina's visa to support her stay in the country. Sources indicate that the extension was granted by the Ministry of External Affairs, with the approval of the Union Home Ministry. However, officials have clarified that India has not granted asylum to Hasina, as there is no specific refugee law in India.
Bangladesh sent a note to India for the return of Sheikh Hasina
On December 23, the interim government of Bangladesh sent a note to the Government of India requesting the return of Sheikh Hasina. This note contained various allegations against Hasina, prompting Bangladesh to seek her return from India. However, the Indian government has yet to provide an official response, as Dhaka has not completed the necessary formalities.
Bangladesh recently revoked the passports of 97 people, among them Sheikh Hasina, who are accused of participating in disappearances and killings during the July protests. On January 6, the Bangladesh International Crimes Tribunal issued an arrest warrant for Hasina, resulting in her arrest alongside 11 others, with an order to appear before the tribunal in February.
Bangladesh Commission plans to question Sheikh Hasina
Major General (Retired) ALM Fazlur Rahman, who leads Bangladesh's National Independent Investigation Commission, recently stated that the commission members wish to travel to India to question Sheikh Hasina. This is part of their investigation into the 2009 Bangladesh Rifles incident that resulted in the deaths of 74 people. However, the Indian government has not yet provided any official response on this matter.
